SEATTLE, Wa-- If his own words are to be believed, former Seattle Mayor Greg
Nickels has not squandered one second of time trying to improve our
communities in the wake of his humiliating defeat in the August, 2009 mayoral
primary. The University of Washington graduate has followed in the footsteps of
the man many consider to have made the most of life after politics, former
Vice-President Al Gore. For Nickels, this means becoming a serious advocate for
green causes, growing a beard, and increasing his own bodyweight by 22%.
"When Nickels said he wanted to become Al Gore, he was serious," said Daniel
Bradley, a former Pacific Intelligencer reporter who used to cover the Nickels
administration . "He has not only adopted Al Gore's views on the environment, he
has also physically transformed himself into Al Gore as well."
Friends close to Nickels have questioned the lengths Nickels is willing to go in
order to become Al Gore. "I never thought he would take it this far," said a former
aide who is still close to Nickels and spoke to the P.I. on condition of anonymity.
"Gore is all he ever talks about now...Al Gore this, Al Gore that... I think this must
be related to his breakdown following the [August, 2009] primary defeat."
Experts interviewed for this story raised concern that Nickels has sublimated his
intense mental anguish after his political fall from grace in 2009 into a bizarre
psychosis in which Nickels believes he is in fact Al Gore. "This isn't just a
man-crush, it's classic Horn's disorder" said psychologist Albert Heath, referring
to the mental illness in which subjects, often following a traumatic event, assume
the personality of someone they admire. "Nickels should be institutionalized
immediately for 24/7 treatment."
